In a recent DebianPlanet feed I found this link which is pretty
interesting, at least from the perspective of someone who has
coordinated and participated to an SMC roadmapping effort:
http://blog.modernmechanix.com/2008/03/24/what-will-life-be-like-in-the-year-2008/
I find two things very interesting: in this article, physical speed is
still a relevant feature - transmission speed is still not a relevant
feature (though it is implicit in some parts of the text); and, computer
networks are barely present, but networks (telephone and TV) are still
considered very relevant. All in all, and doomed cities aside, I find
the vision pretty accurate (doomed cities might well be a metaphor for
ozone and smog pollution problems). The vision fails instead on social
grounds - and this is the lesson to learn (also for the SMC roadmap).
