Dear All,

as many of you will know, a public consultation on the EC-commissioned
"Study on the economic and technical evolution of the scientific
publication markets in Europe" was held from 31 March to 15 June 2006.

The report from this consultation (as well as the study itself, if you
haven't seen it) are now available at the following address:

http://ec.europa.eu/research/science-society/page_en.cfm?id=3185

On 15 and 16 February 2007 the European Commission will host a conference
on scientific publication issues in Brussels at the Charlemagne building.
More information on the conference will soon become available on this
page:

http://ec.europa.eu/research/science-society/page_en.cfm?id=3459

Kind regards,
Dagmar

Public consultation

A public consultation on the EC-commissioned "Study on the economic and
technical evolution of the scientific publication markets in Europe" was
held from 31 March to 15 June 2006, which raised considerable interest
from all concerned stakeholder groups. Responses were received from
individual researchers, academic organisations, libraries and information
organisations, and publishers. Many of the respondents welcomed the study
and its recommendations, while the publishers responding to the study were
critical. A summary of these responses and all individual responses can be
accessed through the links below.

This study marked the first contribution to the current policy debate on
the functioning and efficiency of the scientific publication system. The
next milestone will be a joint communication with DG Information Society
on access to and dissemination of scientific information to be released in
December 2006, which will provoke discussion and debate within the Council
of Ministers and at Member State level. A conference addressing scientific
publication issues will take place on 15 and 16 February in Brussels, and
further details will be available soon.
