Two PhD studentships
Two funded PhD studentships are available from October 2007 to work on
aspects of this research project.
The project will document the practice of nine leading audio artists
working in digital music, post-digital music and experimental
electronica. These genres are areas of musical and cultural activity
which show new trends and approaches to musical composition, supported,
informed and often driven by technology. The research will consider the
application of technology, the cultural and economic operating
circumstances of the genres and the aesthetic stance of composers
working in the field. Nine leading artists will be invited to
participate in the research programme through a series of artist
residencies.
Successful applicants will become part of a highly focussed research
team, will engage in all aspects of the research programme and will be
required to interact with resident artists.
Applications are invited for a PhD studentship (A) to consider cultural
shifts in experimental electronic music; economies of operation,
aspects of performance, dissemination and cultures of consumption.
Applications are also invited for a PhD studentship (B) focussing on
the analysis of music within these genres and the impact of technology
on production and composition methods. This work will include analysis
and documentation of the audio works created by the artists who
participate in the project.
Applicants should have a Master’s degree or equivalent professional
experience in Music, or a related area of study.
Studentships are subject to the terms and conditions of AHRC
Postgraduate Project Studentships. Annual stipends start at £12,600.
Closing date for applications: 12.00 noon on Tuesday 8th May 2007.
